The global market leader in potato chips, Lay’s approached us to investigate their visual identity. In recent years, the brand expression had gotten disjointed. They were looking to take their rightful place as the leading iconic brand and voice in the potato chip space. They just weren’t sure how to get there.
Our approach was reductive vs. additive, stripping back everything to their most simple components. In our opinion, their strongest distinctive asset (the yellow bag) was sitting in plain sight the whole time.
Utilizing the silhouette shape and color of the bag, paired with being more expressive in typography, allowed us to communicate their brand platform “Simple Joy” in the most iconic, graphic, pure and fun way possible.

Playing with our food
There is a nostalgic essence baked into eating potato chips. The snack dates back centuries. We felt like there was a need to capture some of the spirit of early childhood. We wanted to tap into this youthful energy & sense of play, while maintaining our modernity.

For many years, “Stop At Never” was the mantra or rallying cry for Asics and their supporters. This statement was a shared belief in the power of achievement and the dedication to the pursuit of self-betterment, whether athletically or in engineering.
This platform launched during the NYC Marathon and was supported by many campaigns along with a dedicated website revealing the efforts the Asics brand takes in creating the world’s best performing running shoes.

NYC Marathon
Asics has been a sponsor for the New York City Marathon for many years. This particular year we took over the 59th St. Columbus Circle Subway Station under Times Square, creating a number of engagements to reinforce the feeling of accomplishment and to add more fuel to the pre-race anticipation for the runners. For the spectators and general audience, we wanted to evoke a higher sense of understanding of how great an achievement running a marathon is by expressing pace and distance in interesting ways.
A few highlights are the Run With Ryan digital wall and the real-time run tracker. We created a video billboard in the subway tunnel showing Ryan Hall (top-ranked American marathoner) running at competition pace, allowing the audience to race against him…and better realize how incredible the pace over that distance really is. The time tracker gave you the ability to plug in the name of a marathoner and see their time as they are running.

We were enlisted by Highdive to reimagine the visual identity for The General Insurance. The General had long been associated with low-budget insurance but wanted to elevate their brand to compete with mid to high-tier insurers.
Our approach was to disengage with their mascot who, beloved as he is in certain circles, was cheapening the brand. We also wanted to distance ourselves further from any military iconography given there is no affiliation or association to the armed services.
However, strong equity existed in the character. So we created some connective tissue between him and our logomark while giving it added purpose. The helmet over the G was enough to call back our character while impressing upon consumers that they would be well covered.
A path was created for The General character to play a supporting role in illustration, where he could be more flexible & expressive in communicating brand principles.

Deep inside (it’s actually outside) the Nomad World Pub in Milwaukee sits a shack awaiting travelers with weary feet and stomachs to fill their bellies for the next stretch of their travels. There is no better companion than a 1/2 lb of savory beef…however short that friendship may last.
All kidding aside, Nomad World Pub is our preeminent soccer pub. Catering to the worldly sport’s fanbase in every way possible. When they reached out for us to help develop the brand identity for an “all-season” take-and-go (or take-and-sit) burger shack with a sharpened edge view of the seasoned foodwise drifter…we filled our bellies and went to burgerdom.

Hailing from Tallmadge, OH, Foreign Car Specialties focuses on the restoration of vintage British motorcars. When they came to Three-Headed to rebrand their identity and bring their passion for revitalizing these timeless classics to the forefront, we generously offered to do it in trade. They said without mincing words, “Absolutely not”. We still said yes.
Borrowing from what they do and the era they focus on, bringing a fully custom approach that could both feel pulled from the past but relevant in the present was necessary. We wanted something that felt distinctly theirs but lived in the automotive landscape of years gone by, conjuring up feelings of nostalgia.

Shorewood Farmers Market sits on the banks of the Milwaukee River on a mile-long stretch of Estabrook Park. One of the bigger and more popular markets in the city of Milwaukee, Shorewood Business District came to us for an updated visual identity to reflect the personality of the neighborhood, the extended offerings of the market, and the one-on-one interaction between city residents and its surrounding farms.
We created a mark and identity system that attempts to fulfill the culmination of these intentions while not losing sight of the overall charm of this community and the joy that perusing a farmer’s market in summer can bring. A bird in a sun hat seemed to capture the vibe perfectly.
